What is a Flex Desk?
Mar 24, 2022The hybrid office model is gaining in popularity as more and more companies are bringing employees back into the office. But companies attempting to accommodate for the most agile workforce ever have to face a new challenge: what to do with all of their desks and workspaces now that they aren’t all being used every day.
One solution to this problem is the flex desk. No, this isn’t referring to an adjustable-height desk—it’s a method that allows one desk to be used by more than one employee throughout the course of a work week.
Flex Desks, Explained
The flex desk does away with the classic concept of assigning one desk or workspace to one employee, making way for something less permanent yet still effective. A flex desk is unassigned and available for an employee to use whenever they come into the office. It could lead to one employee using a desk for the three days in which they’re working in the office, then others using the desk on days in which said employee is working remotely.
Flex Desking vs. Hoteling
You may have also heard of the terms “hot desking” and “hoteling.” If you’re unsure of exactly what they mean, fear not. “Hot desk” and “flex desk” refer to the same practice. “Hoteling,” on the other hand, is the act of allowing your employees to “book” desks to use on days when they come in, whether it’s for a short period of time or an extended one.
